Yes, that’s the same Skrillex that many people know as one of the leading dubstep performers. But don’t let that fool you into thinking these are just another generic smartphone case with no real sense of style or functionality. On the contrary, the Skrillex cases look incredibly beautiful and actually have added functionality.
Google added the Skrillex “Live Cases” earlier this week, making them available for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Galaxy S5, Galaxy S6, and Galaxy Note 4. Customers can choose from one of three Skrillex designs, including the Space Shield, Circuit Bae, and Lil Planet, all of which cost $40 bucks. Dropping $40 on a case may sound a little expensive, especially considering the fact that other smartphone cases sell for as little as $10. However, the Skrillex Live Case isn’t your ordinary smartphone case. It features some truly stunning artwork with an added bonus of functionality.
According to the Google Store listing, each Skrillex Live Case is individually numbered with “built-in smarts.” This reportedly allows users to customize a new shortcut button on the back of the case, using it to launch the phone’s camera, open apps, etc. Google didn’t reveal how exactly this new customizable button works, but other sources claim the button uses near-field communications (NFC) technology to establish a signal between the phone and the case.
“Each Skrillex Live Case is individually numbered and comes with built-in smarts. A customizable shortcut button gives you one-touch access to your favorite stuff. You can set it to launch the phone’s camera, open any of your apps or, of course, go to Skrillex’s site.”
In other words, the button located on the back of the new Skrillex Live Case doesn’t actually press a physical button on the Nexus 5 (or any other compatible smartphone for that matter). Instead, it transmits the “click” via NFC to the Nexus 5, at which point the customized operation is executed. If you set up the button to launch your Nexus 5’s camera, for instance, pressing it will do just that.
