LG To Build The New Nexus 5

There’s been some speculation regarding who exactly will manufacture the upcoming 2015 Nexus 5. Some sources have claimed LG will take the honors, while others have said Huawei will build it. While neither of these companies have officially confirmed these rumors, a new report from AndroidPit suggests that LG will build the highly anticipated N5 handset.

The Android enthusiast website says an anonymous source told them the 2015 Nexus 5 is still in development — and that LG was building it. Of course, this isn’t shocking news, as most people expect the device be released around October-November. What’s interesting, however, is that AndroidPit’s source specifically says LG will be building it. This is one of the reports we’ve found that points to a specific manufacturer for the device.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the device is still in development, told AndroidPIT that LG would not base the 2015 Nexus on the company’s current flagship, the LG G4,” wrote AndroidPit in its report.

Another interesting takeaway from the report is that, according to AndroidPit, LG is building the Nexus 5 from the ground up, meaning it won’t be modeled after the company’s flagship smartphone, the G4. The LG G4 is arguably one of the hottest and most powerful smartphones on the market. Featuring a 5.5-inch full-HD display (2560 x 1440 resolution), 16-megapixel primary camera, 8-megapixel secondary camera, Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, and 3GB of random access memory (RAM), it’s a true best of a smartphone. This begs the question then: why isn’t LG modeling the new Nexus 5 after the G4?

We can only assume that Google had very specific instructions when it asked LG to build the Nexus 5. I think it’s safe to say that Google dropped the ball with the Nexus 6 — a mistake it’s hoping to avoid with the new Nexus 5. If Google simply allowed LG to build the Nexus 5 at its own discretion, who knows what kind of handset we would see. It could be another hit just like the G4, but it could be a failure like the Nexus 6.

With LG taking the lead with the new Nexus 5, does this mean Huawei is out of the race? Not necessarily, as rumors continue to swirl that the Chinese-based tech company will also produce the Nexus 5. The most plausible scenario as of now is that both LG and Huawei will build the Nexus 5. LG is rumored to be building a variant of the Nexus 5, featuring a 5.2-inch display and 2700 mAh battery, whereas Huawei is believed to be building a 5.7-inch variant with a larger 3200 mAh battery.
