Google Nexus 5 Now Works With Samsung Galaxy Gear!

When Samsung originally released their highly anticipated Galaxy Gear smartwatch back in September 2013, it received mixed reviews from consumers and tech junkies. Being able to connect your watch and phone together was pretty neat, but it was more of a novelty feature at best. And to make matters worse, Samsung’s new smartphone was only available for use with the company’s Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 10.1. Now, however, developers have found a way to connect the Google Nexus 5 with the Samsung Galaxy Gear…

Update: Samsung later added the Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4 and Note 2  to their lineup of Galaxy Gear-compatible devices.

Samsung hasn’t “officially” added the Nexus 5 to their Galaxy Gear smartwatch, but developers have found a workaround to this problem. If you currently own a Galaxy Gear smartwatch and want to use your Nexus 5 with it, see the tutorial below for more information.

  1. Download gearmanagerstub.apk on your Google Nexus 5 smartphone.
  2. Download Gear Manager 1.6.111801 on your computer
  3. Rename the Gear Manager 1.6.111801 from apk to zip format.
  4. Unzip the files.
  5. Open each individual apk file and transfer it to your Google Nexus 5.
  6. Install the full Gear Manager 1.6.111801 onto your Google Nexus 5.
  7. Install ATNManager 1.2.2

Assuming you followed the steps listed above, you should now be able to control your Nexus 5 with your Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch! The final program mentioned in step seven is the tool used to configure your device. It allows you to define which notifications you wish to receive on your Galaxy Gear and vise-versa. The Galaxy Gear offers a fun way to check your messages, emails, notifications and more. Besides, it’s a pretty cool device to show off to your buddies, especially when it’s hooked up to your Nexus 5.

You don’t have to limit yourself to only using your Google Nexus 5 with the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch. The instructions outlined here  work with the Google Nexus 7 or Nexus 10 tablet computers. Just perform the same steps using your device. With that said, the Galaxy Gear smartwatch is designed to work with a single device, so we don’t recommend trying to hook up several devices to your smartwatch.
